Toxic Titties Take On Gay Marriage

April 23, 2002:
I vow to respect, challenge and cherish my fellow Titties.
In fame and obscurity
In poverty and wealth
Through failure and success
In sickness and in health
With citizenship and lack thereof
Through bad ideas and good
In Los Angeles and to the ends of the earth
Until this collaboration ceases to be a positive, productive force in my life.

I vow to keep the Toxic in Toxic Titties.
I vow to overcome obstacles and resistance through strategy, pleasure, and perseverance.
I vow to create artistic, economic and discursive structures that will sustain us and our practice.

The Toxic Titties held the Toxic Union of our collective in a CalArts gallery space, inviting the entire institution along with our queer community to join us in the elaborate baroque campy pageant of faggotry that was the signing of our general partnership agreement and high drama wedding. This event was complete with weeping mothers of the brides, a legal team, a fairy godmother, flower "girls" on roller skates, a team of stylists, and a veritable tribe of maids of dishonor.

Gay marriage was a particularly hot topic at the time, and the Toxic Titties took this opportunity to express our displeasure at the homonormativity of gay marraige focused activism, while at the same time using the performative force of the wedding event to enact recognition of our unconventional queer familial bonds.
